“BLACK PEARLS // Concept and direction #bybry

🖤 She initially came up with this concept as a way to speak to Black women’s vulnerability and using pearls for that messaging was intentional.

🖤 The balancing act that Black women have to perform of leading with an harder exterior but not too hard to be perceived as a threat, while still desiring to live a soft life on the inside is the subtle messaging behind my decision.

🖤 The final edits are reminiscent of a Kerry James Marshall painting: “Silence Is Golden” (1986) — an unintentional decision but a full circle moment as Marshall’s work of Black figures examines the balance of visibility + invisibility of the Black community in the U.S.”
